Putting the brakes on flash rust

Case Study

A leading remanufacturer of automotive brake calipers faced a significant challenge with flash rust appearing on finished goods, which often wasn’t detected until the products reached retail stores. This resulted in costly returns and damaged relationships with distributors. At AAPEX 2015, the company’s Senior Technical Product Manager sought help from Hubbard-Hall to solve the flash rust issue and restore confidence in their products.

Hubbard-Hall’s technical team identified that the remanufacturer’s water-based rust prevention method, combined with vapor corrosion inhibiting (VPI) paper, was causing moisture entrapment and flash rust. They recommended switching to Metal Guard 560, a solvent-based, water-displacing rust preventer.

  • Metal Guard 560 has rapid water displacement, a high flashpoint for safety, and low odor, and can be applied via dipping, spraying, or brushing.
